The 6th meeting on Access to Medicines under Universal Health Coverage in the Asia Pacific Region was held in Manila, Philippines from 24 to 25 September 2019.
Specific objectives of the meeting were:
1. To share information on managing medicines prices and ensuring affordability to improve access, especially in low-middle income country setting
2. To develop knowledge and skills to improve efficiency of procurement and price negotiations
3. To promote exchange of experience between countries with regard to policies and strategies used to lower prices and make medicines more affordable
4. To identify a simplified list of indicators to monitor the performance of the core functions of a national pharmaceutical system, and discuss the feasibility of data collection and importance to stakeholders
Sessions covering issues such as, ‘Overview of the access to medicines under UHC in the Asia Pacific Region network’, ‘Access to medicines: A changing agenda regionally and globally’, ‘Tools and indicators to measure access to medicines and the components of a national pharmaceutical system’, ‘Improving price transparency: taking stock and moving forward’, ‘About HTA, drugs consumption and other international comparative work’, ‘Strategies to address challenges as individual countries and collaboratively’, ‘Ways forward on collaboration via this network’ were held.
Prof Soonman Kwon, Director of the Centre, gave a keynote presentation titled ‘Implication of population ageing for pharmaceuticals policies’, and also participated as a moderator of panel discussion titled ‘Can transparency lower prices and improve access to pharmaceuticals?’.
