The Seventh Meeting of the Asia-Pacific
Network on Access to Medicines under Universal Health Coverage was held at the
Leela Palace in New Delhi, India from 13 to 14 June 2023.
Starting with a keynote presentation by
Prof. Soonman Kwon on COVID-19 and changing health systems and pharmaceutical sector in
the Asia Pacific region, participants
addressed the global and regional overview on access to medicines as well as
emerging challenges on access to medicines during and after public health
emergencies and building resilient supply chain. Specific topics included
pharmaceutical politics for UHC with global perspective, access to medicines in
South-East Asia region, access to medicines in the Western Pacific region, and
strengthening health system resilience by improving medical supply chain
security.
Further presentations followed
particularly on pharmaceutical pricing policy, price information exchange, and
improving access at primary health care and for NCDs. Specific topics included WHO
guideline on pricing policies, pharmaceutical pricing and reimbursement,
pricing regulation in the private sector/mark-up regulations, medicines price
information in South-East Asia, PIEMEDS platform, and prioritization of primary health care for
building back better in the SEA Region. Finally, through group works, participants
discussed progress and challenges regarding pharmaceutical situations in all
member state countries which would later lead to further discussion over pricing
regulations and lessons from neighboring countries. The meeting concluded with
group discussions over collaboration and network activities among member
countries. Uhjin Kim of WHO SEARO delivered the meeting summary along with
